A Well That Never Dries

Nam Tchun-Mo (b. 1961) represents a contemporary continuation of Dansaekhwa, a South Korean art movement that began exploring radical abstraction, monochrome palettes, and three-dimensionality in the 1960s. Through repetitive actions within a meditative painting practice, Nam creates a modern interpretation of golbeop—a classical principle of East Asian painting that emphasizes the structural vitality and life force of the brushstroke. His work organically bridges tradition and contemporaneity, craftsmanship and abstract form, and physicality and spirituality, while weaving together personal memory and collective cultural experience. The central formal elements of his practice are lines reminiscent of furrowed fi elds and architectural motifs, such as traditional lattice windows and rafters. A Well That Never Dries is our second collaboration with Nam Tchun-Mo, following Beam Lines Spring Stroke (2019). This project marks a rare but welcome excursion for our program, as we venture beyond photography into the realms of painting and sculpture.
