MYPH is the first photo publication about the Mykolaiv Young Photography School, which was founded in 2018 by Sergey Melnitchenko. It started in Melnitchenko’s hometown, but now his students are all over Ukraine and even abroad.
“When I got the idea for the school,” Sergey says, “I wanted to work on expanding imaginations and the understanding of contemporary photography among photographers, colleagues, and students. I was looking for professional growth and communication. And we’ve done a lot in the four years MYPH has been around: in addition to the teaching itself, we’ve organized or participated in more than twenty projects (exhibitions, festivals, markets, etc.) in Ukraine, Poland, Italy, France, Austria, and South Korea. After russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the school made its own NFT collection, which numbers 333 photographs. 50% of the proceeds are being sent to help the army and those suffering from the war.”
Melnitchenko selected 60 artists for this photobook. Designer Katia Lesiv had the idea for the interviews so the artists could continue their conversation with the authors, so they could tell about their journeys, thoughts, and dreams in this difficult time of war.
MYPH is a co-publication of RODOVID and MYPH.
